Improper handling of excavators in long-term out of service will cause big trouble

Feb 12, 2025

Friends who drive excavators know that there are many variables in construction projects, the amount of work is sometimes large and sometimes small, the weather is unpredictable, and the change of seasons also has an impact. Construction machinery and equipment often face shutdowns or even need to be shelved for a long time.

Every winter, many equipment can only be parked for a long time due to insufficient work. Don't underestimate this. If the parking method is wrong, the maintenance is improper during storage, or the operation of starting the engine after a long period of parking is incorrect, the damage to equipment such as excavators will be considerable. In serious cases, the engine may even have a cylinder failure.

In reality, such situations are common, and the property losses caused by this are really regrettable. So, what should we do to avoid these regrettable things?

Most friends who have bought new equipment have received an "Operation and Maintenance Manual". Have you all read it carefully? When your "beloved car" needs to be stored for a long time, do you strictly follow the requirements of the manual? Here, the editor has carefully sorted out several key points, hoping to provide you with real help.

Key points for engine maintenance when the equipment is parked for a long time
1. Start the engine regularly to preserve the oil film: The engine needs to be started once a month, so that a layer of oil film can be reattached to the surface of the moving parts, just like putting on a protective film on them, reducing friction and loss between parts.

2. Check the drainage to ensure safety: Before the equipment is put into storage, after the engine stops running completely, carefully check the oil in all parts and drain the water in them. During the inventory storage period, this step should also be done before starting the engine every month to ensure the safety of the equipment during storage.

3. Fully warm up the engine to protect the engine: Every time you start the engine, be sure to perform a full warm-up operation. This is like a warm-up before an athlete goes on the field, allowing the engine components to gradually adapt to the working state to avoid damage caused by sudden operation.

Precautions for the activation of equipment that has been stored for a long time and has not been maintained for more than half a year

1. Change oil and boost pressure and then start: If the equipment has been stored for a long time and has not been maintained for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, the engine oil must be changed before starting the engine. After the replacement is completed, turn the key to start the starter motor. You must first confirm that the oil pressure has risen (that is, turn the key but do not start the engine, wait for the oil pressure to rise), and then officially start the engine. Here you must remember that before changing the oil, never start the starter motor, otherwise it may cause serious damage to the engine.

2. Replace the filter element at the same time for more peace of mind: When changing the oil, you must also replace the oil filter element at the same time. The oil filter element is like a "mask" for the engine, which can filter out impurities in the oil and work with the oil to better protect the engine.

3. Overdue inspection to ensure performance: Pay special attention to the fact that if the equipment has been in stock for more than one year, it is not enough to just replace the oil and filter element. It is also necessary to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the equipment to ensure that the performance of each component of the equipment is intact to avoid potential failures due to long-term idleness and affect subsequent use.
